Eye for an eye...or turn your cheek? what do you think of the death penalty.?

so what is your opinion on the death penalty?
i personally believe that if you were whitnessed commiting a crime, you should pay equally for that crime. you steal from me..i steal from you. you kill a person...you be killed.
who has a real legitimate argument for this topic.
people who sit in jails, are using our tax money.we are paying for them to eat 3 meals a day, and hang out with their cell mates.
whats your opinion.
Answers:
Actually, I was discussing the "eye for an eye" verse with a Biblical scholar, and he told me that it was actually in the context of MODERATING punishment. Prior to those times, "mob rule" was prescribing inordinate punishments for relatively minor crimes, like the death penalty for stealing a loaf of bread. This verse was to assure that punishments were NOT too harsh.
That said, I was pro-death penalty for a long time, but I have changed my stance over the years, for several reasons:
1. By far the most compelling is this: Sometimes the legal system gets it wrong. Look at all the criminals who are being released after years of imprisonment because they were exonerated by DNA evidence. Unfortunately, DNA evidence is not available in most cases. No matter how rare it is, the government should not risk executing one single innocent person.
Really, that should be reason enough for most people. If you need more, read on:
2. Because of the extra expense of prosecuting a DP case and the appeals process (which is necessary - see reason #1), it costs taxpayers MUCH more to execute prisoners than to imprison them for life.
3. The deterrent effect is questionable at best. Violent crime rates are actually higher in death penalty states. This may seem counterintuitive, and there are many theories about why this is (Ted Bundy saw it as a challenge, so he chose Florida – the most active execution state at the time – to carry out his final murder spree). Personally, I think it has to do with the hypocrisy of taking a stand against murder…by killing people. The government becomes the bad parent who says, ‘do as I say, not as I do.’
4. There’s also an argument to be made that death is too good for the worst of our criminals. Let them wake up and go to bed every day of their lives in a prison cell, and think about the freedom they DON’T have, until they rot of old age. When Ted Bundy was finally arrested in 1978, he told the police officer, “I wish you had killed me.”
5. The U.S. government is supposed to be secular, but for those who invoke Christian law in this debate, you can find arguments both for AND against the death penalty in the Bible. For example, Matthew 5:38-39 insists that violence shall not beget violence. James 4:12 says that God is the only one who can take a life in the name of justice. Leviticus 19:18 warns against vengeance (which, really, is what the death penalty amounts to). In John 8:7, Jesus himself says, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
Murder is murder. How do you justify murdering someone as punishment for the fact that they murdered someone. Doesn't make any sense and it's a bit hypocritical if you ask me. Nobody should ever have the authority to end someones life. That's what they're trying to avoid anyway right? As far as the tax money, I'd much rather they used it to house dangerouse criminals as opposed to spending it on sending our men and women into a war that was unfounded.
That being said, I do think that jail/prison should be more of a punishment as opposed to a vacation. There should be no access to anything but a jail cell and a mess hall. They shouldn't have access to tv, weights, board games (dominoes, chess, checkers). The only reason they should have access to books is if they're furthering their education. If they made it less like home I think they'd be less likely to want to go back.
kill em all ' let God sort em out '
thats what i say
have a pleasant day lol
i kind of like the way the Arab world handles some of their criminals:
if you rape...you are castrated
if you steal...your hand is cut off
it would certainly curtail a lot of crime, i feel...hence making room in jails for other criminals and as a serious determent to doing a crime in the first place, would make one really think hard about pursuing a life of crime BEFORE ruining their lives and the lives of others (victims)
I believe in the eye for an eye principle. You cannot give criminals the upper hand and expect society to function.
Witness the high crime rate in Europe, Australia and and America of the 1970's. I can remember that time period and I do not wish to go back.
The death penalty is the best solution for certain groups of people who commit certain acts. The left always screams that the Death Penalty does not prevent crime. The tell me how many more people will Tim McVeigh bomb, Ted Bundy slaughter or Roger Dale Stafford kill.
where i see that some crimes truely deserve the death penalty, as a christian, i don't like to pay for it. i feel we should have the option to restrict our tax money from paying for executions. i'll pay my taxes, BUT i do not want to pay for state sponsered killings. same with abortion. it is the womans right to choose, BUT don't use my money to pay for it, (medi caide, medi care, welfare, etc).
i do not trust elected officials to make decisions on life and death for people. there are countless incidents in recent memory of people given the death penalty at the hands of over zealous prosecutors who have been totaly exonerated. HELL, they suspended every death sentence in illinois because of corruption among the DA and cops! how 'bout in oklahoma where the crime lab lady had faked all the DNA evidence for years?
you assume the people the state puts to death are actually guilty. maybe some of them got rail roaded.besides that though, it's wrong to kill BET THAT! i'll let you and your know it all buddies pay the cost of executions and i'll let ya'll live with it too...
I think they should be branded, on their forehead, and depending on the nature of the offense, they should be hunted, and have a bounty on them, that will solve the cost of confining them in jail, plus the cost of death penalty and death row, plus Murderers, child molestors, rapists, thieves, and terrorists dont deserve rights anyway, so they should be hunted. It would cut down on the amount of crime, because the consequence of their actions will lead to them dying. plus i know there is people who say killing someone who killed someone makes you just as bad as them, but in all fairness, if someone who kills 10 children, is killed by the hand of someone who hasnt even killed anyone, that persons death is justified, and the person who took that life is forgiven, since when is someone who kills innocent people judged the same as someone who kills bad people? im not god, and i dont make the rules, i know its not my call but people who kill people, or rape people, or steal from people, or plan terrorist attacks on people, dont deserve to breathe, they actually deserve the harshest and most severe form of death imaginable, some peoples opinions differ, and they believe everyone has rights, well thats your opinion, i believe when you commit certain crimes, you should be held accountable for your actions, but once again, thats just my opinion.
It says in the bible"Do unto others as you would be done by"
I interpret that as if you kill someone then you forfeit your life.
When a murderer is put to death it is called JUSTICE. I am for the death penalty because the scum is likely to kill again.
Somebody ID the killer, only to find out that she was in her kitchen with a fogged frame window with out her glasses on. I don't know about you but I would hate to be that person being convicted of that crime.
Then again the post a few up makes a great point. I would look to the evidence of the crime in order to make that call. If somebody goes out and slays 10 people and there is enough evidence to show with out a reasonable doubt, then yes, fry his rear.
Its late, my grammer might be off, opps.
I personally feel that every person should be given a second chance and that punishment is not the solution. Believe me in most cases it does work , but yes at the same time I strongly feel that this kinda chance can just not be given to rapists , child molesters, serial killers or terrorists. Capital punishment or death penalty is the only answer to such criminals.
Also, a funny one here: if everybody would believe in eye for an eye, then we all would go blind!!! Lol!
The death penalty is not vengeance. Everybody makes the mistake of thinking of it in those terms. The death penalty is societies way of saying to the offender, " Because of your deeds, you are no longer fit to remain in society. We have determined that you are incapable of rehabilitation and your crimes so hienous that you are to be terminated"
The death penalty is neither deterrent nor justice.
Have you ever been in side a jail. I went on a tour of Mountjoy prison in Ireland. It scared the crap out of me. I mean to spend a few months here would be awful, but to spend your entire life there. Jail is not a cosy as many people think.
Maxxxp, Europe's and Australia's crime rate is lower than that of the US. These are countries that are as advanced as the US and the EU murder rate is less than half and australia's a quarter of the US's.
Recently, life term prisoners in Italy wrote to the Italian president pleading for the death penalty. Now I don't know about you, but there is justice in having murderers begging for their lives to be ended and refusing them.
Plus, I am a firm believer that all life is sacred even if a person uses their's to take another's, life is too precious, we do not give it so we cannot take it away.
My ans. is not advisable to death penalty must better to long life in prison. until the end of life. bec. life is go on.and if the death penalty are doing. God angry with the judge of juctice this a mortal sin.
The death penalty is not an effective way to prevent or reduce crime and it risks executing innocent people.
You may not realize that it also costs much more than life without parole (see the last source for why it costs more.) Here are answers to questions about the practical aspects of the death penalty, with sources listed below.
What about the risk of executing innocent people?
124 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence.
Doesn't DNA keep new cases like these from happening?
DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides. It is not a guarantee against the execution of innocent people.
Doesn't the death penalty prevent others from committing murder?
No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in states that do not.
So, what are the alternatives?
Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.
But isn't the death penalty cheaper than keeping criminals in prison?
The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, largely because of the legal process. Extra costs include those due to the complicated nature of both the pre trial investigation and of the trials (involving 2 separate stages, mandated by the Supreme Court) in death penalty cases and subsequent appeals. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.
What about the very worst crimes?
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??
Doesn't the death penalty help families of murder victims?
Not necessarily. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.
So, why don't we speed up the process?
Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person.
But don’t Americans prefer the death penalty as the most serious punishment?
Not any more. People are rethinking their views, given the facts and the records on innocent people sentenced to death. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole.
God Spared Cain... And, Turned Saul in a Saint...
"let those without sin throw the first stone." no one could do it. Therfore... the death penalty is bad. Remember, Jesus said to turn the other cheek in the New Testament, he said not to do an eye for an eye, because that does nothing. Send the people to jail for a very long time, make them do labor work, but do not kill them, for it's not our right to do so. God is our Judge.
