Filing for disability for an adult child?

My 19 year old daughter (in Alabama) has multiple mental illness diagnoses. She has been holding a job but she is having a very hard time and I don't know much longer she can hold on. I have heard that it can take years to qualify for disability benefits. Can someone shed some light on this subject?
Answers:
If your daughter is still working they will not even look at Total Disability. If your daughter gets to the point she can't work it does not takes years, if she totally and permantly disable to hold down any job. What you do take her to a Doctor that in estimation she's total disable tohold down any job, it's best to get a Specialist in her form of Disability . Get him to write a narrative report on your daughters condition , it doesn't hurt to have 2 or 3 backing, the more the better her chances. Go to Social Security Office take a live Birth Certificate , they don't accept the one she received from the hospital. You get a live Birth Certificate from the County she was born in , there is form they will give you. Fill out a application for Disabilty with one of the clerks take all you have to the clerk along with her Physcians reports. They will fill out all the information and whtever else they need they will tell you. In return after they get all theinformation they need they send it in for you to the State Social Security Office . Then you wait if you are approved , but sometimes if they feel they need a little more medical information they will send you to a Social Seuritymedical center free of charge. The Doctor there will talk to your daughter. If she is approved the first time , you'll receive a certificate of elgibility of the amount of money she will receive each month in 2 years they'll send form to sign in order for her to get Medicare A%26B.
She'll get a cost of living raise each year on her check.
I know a friend she was approved on her first application afer doing all they had told her to do. It took from the time she signed exactly 2 months to get her certificate of elgibilty, if your turned but perhaps and you try it all over again and when is approved they go back and pay for the monthsthat she signed up. She may be eligible ffor SSI but that is how you go about getting started. It isn't a easything but then again once you are approved your there for life. They are running this all together I can't use spell check to long message.
Best Of luck To You and your Daughter. I hope you can make this out run together.
I believe that the first step would be to get informed of the sources of help that there are in Alabama (e.g., Dept. of Mental Health, and / or not for profit organizations). They can guide you on the necessary steps depending on your daughter's needs.
